From the “Pelican” newspaper – February 2, 2008 – Brian Kelly
Joe. Java. Rocket fuel. Call it what you like, Pleasure Island loves its coffee, be it hot or over ice, leaded or unleaded – that’s without and with cream.
And one of the best places to get jacked up for a busy day is at Dizzy Bean Coffee Shop in Gulf Shores.
Dizzy Bean owner, Cindy Stewart, took over in March 2007 when it came up for sale. Purchasing an established coffee shop in Gulf Shores wasn’t a hard decision, mainly because she had done so before in the country of Norway.
“Running my own coffee shop in another country was something I’d done, so I presented the previous owner of Dizzy Bean an offer to purchase it,” Stewart said. “Bu I wasn’t prepared for my offer to be accepted, because it was such a long shot, so I was surprised when it finally was.”
Stewart does more than just own Dizzy Bean, she is also a real estate agent and personal trainer in Gulf Shores. As owner of the coffee shop however, she’s hands-on when it come to the day-to-day operations. It’s a demand that finds her at the shop each morning at the break of dawn and there when she serves her last cup of coffee at the day’s end. Another element that Stewart knew she needed to maintain customers was consistency. And so she credits the continued success of Dizzy Bean to her friendly staff, some of whom were employed under the previous owner.
“My staff has accepted the many changes with the new ownership. They’ve really stepped up to the plate to do what’s needed to continue the success the shop had before I bought it. I couldn’t ask for a more loyal staff.”
Order one drink at Dizzy Bean and no doubt the staff will have the drink ready when you enter the next time. It’s that approach to customer service that Stewart emphasizes.
While Stewart is proud and content to be a popular stop for those needing their daily coffee fix, her quaint Pleasure Island cafe’ is also a popular hangout for those looking to linger while reading the newspaper or using the internet. In fact, on any given afternoon, Stewart herself can be seen sitting outside chatting with local artists who wander into the adjacent gallery, Tino’s Fine Arts.
From the trendiest lattes, cappuccinos, gourmet teas and specialty coffee blends to your standard cup of java, Dizzy Bean is a legendary café on Pleasure Island, one whose newest proprietor has carried on the tradition of serving coffee with a smile to the area’s residents and visitors.
